The Lotus Flower is one of the most beautiful creations in the nature and is known for it’s tenderness and beauty. It also stands as a testimony for purity and beatitude, because this flower emerges from the marshy bottoms of the pond, and rises up to become a thing of beauty. It gives a silent message to the humanity that circumstances around oneself doesn’t matter but it is the attitude to grow with open-mindedness is what is required. One of the Sanskrit names of Lotus is “pankaja”. The word “panka” implies mud and “ja” implies born; so “pankaja” implies “that which is born from mud”. This etymological significance reiterates the message at the back of our mind that irrespective of the dire circumstances around oneself, there is every possibility of growth and success in life.
Lotus has got great importance in various religious philosophies like Buddhism and Hinduism also. Various deities, Buddha etc. are visualized seated on Lotus, holding Lotus, having Lotus-like feet etc. which symbolize tenderness and purity. Lotus also stands for symbol of detachment and stoicism as they stand apart from marshy pond and give a message to the humanity that “do your assigned work with dedication as a worship to Lord and be detached to its fruits”. There is also another interesting phenomenon associated with Lotus. Lotus blooms as the Sun rises. The Sun symbolizes Teacher and the Lotus symbolizes the Student / Aspirant. The Teacher (Sun) with his Knowledge (Sunlight) makes the Student (Lotus) bloom. Owing to the grace, love and affection of the Teacher, the Student blooms with knowledge. So, Lotus also stands to the “student’s receptiveness and right attitude”. It is this attitude of receptiveness, learning attitude, humility, tenderness and respect towards the Teacher, which makes him bloom into an all-round personality. Thus, the Student with such an all-round development endowed with divine virtues like power of discrimination, knowledge, humility, open-mindedness, ever-learning attitude, respect towards their teachers, preceptors and are like that of attitude of a Lotus, thus, termed to be ‘vidwan’.
